University of Connecticut Humanities Institute Residential Fellowship

Faculty Residential Fellowships are opportunities for individuals to pursue advanced work in the humanities. Applicants may be faculty or staff members of colleges or universities, or independent scholars and writers.

Projects may contribute to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of the humanities. Recipients might eventually produce scholarly articles, a monograph on a specialized subject, a book on a broad topic, an archaeological site report, a translation, an edition, or other scholarly tools.

Faculty Residential Fellowships support projects that can be completed during the tenure of an award or those that are part of a long-term endeavor. Applicants should have held the Ph.D. for four years. Independent scholars and writers must have an advanced record of professional accomplishment.

Faculty Residential Fellowships do not support projects to study teaching methods or theories. Neither do they support surveys of courses and programs or the preparation of institutional curricula.


Faculty Residential Fellowships, EXTERNAL - Funds, Tenure, and Conditions
External fellows receive a stipend of $40,000, faculty library privileges, and assistance in locating housing and are required to present a public lecture in their discipline in spring semester. Tenure normally covers an uninterrupted period of from nine to twelve whole months. Fellows are required to be in residence for the academic year.

Fellowship recipients will not be allowed to defer a UCHI fellowship to the award of a fellowship from another agency. Fellows may begin tenure August 15. The latest that fellows may begin tenure is September 15. Ordinarily, fellowships run from late August through May.

Applicants are required to submit three letters of reference.

All fellows are expected to acknowledge the University of Connecticut Humanities Institute in publications resulting from work supported by the Institute.
